Ilha do Faial, Portugal
There is architecture that inspires with its form, textures and ideas, and then there is architecture that attracts you through a change of context. Capellinhos Lighthouse is not among the top architectural monuments in the world, but it is a unique place. After the volcanic eruption in 1957, a new territory was added to the island, and the lighthouse could no longer fulfill its main function. To study the resulting rocks, a research centre was built underground (so as not to destroy the unique landscape), which received the award for the best European museum in 2012.
